How to Protect Your Hair From Winter Damage

How to Protect Your Hair From Winter Damage

It isn’t just severe heat that can damage our hair. When the weather starts getting chilly, our hair can seem dull and show signs of breakage and dryness. A big reason for this is the effect that dry heat — found in our apartments, home, and workspaces during winter — has on our tresses. Don’t get too worried, though, you can do a multitude of things to take care of your locks this fall and winter and keep them looking as beautiful and healthy as ever.

Wear a Hat or Silk Scarf

An easy way to protect your hair from the outside elements is to simply tuck it up underneath a hat. Wool or knit hats have the bonus of looking cute and keeping you warm at the same time, a rare thing as we fashion-forward beauty mavens know. For extra protection, wrap your hair in a silk scarf before throwing on a hat. The scarf will prevent the material of the hat from pulling, tangling, or potentially breaking your strands.

Choose a Low-Key Hairstyle

Some people mistakenly assume that in order to look put together, we have to spend hours with our curling irons creating the perfect beachy waves or straightening our hair with other heated tools. Sometimes all that effort is totally worth it, but with the internet posting hundreds of DIY tutorials on how to do five-minute braided updos or topknots for any occasion, we can skip the damaging hot tools and still look super cute for the holiday season.

Moisturize and Condition

If your hair feels dried out and frizzy, it might be time to think about the importance of moisturizing. Make sure your shampoo and conditioner are sulfate-free, since sulfates are harsh on your locks and can strip your hair of natural oils that keep it healthy, shiny, and strong. Consider purchasing a leave-in conditioner, which you put on the ends of damp hair to lock in moisture and leave your hair soft and smooth after blow-drying. Another option to really kick up the moisture levels is a hair mask. Like face masks, hair masks can target specific concerns, and work to penetrate the hair follicles more intensely than regular shampoo or conditioner.
