Sun-Kissed Hair: Two Ways to Naturally Achieve Summer-Ready Highlights

Sun-Kissed Hair: Two Ways to Naturally Achieve Summer-Ready Highlights

Break out your shorts and Ray Bans, because summer is here. What better way to celebrate summer but with an all over summer glow? Especially sun streaked locks. But, not all of us have the time or money to spend to get that summer ready look. Luckily, you can achieve summer highlights with a few quick and easy, all-natural methods with ingredients you probably already have at home.

The Lemon Method

You’ll need:

  • Water
  • Small spray bottle
  • Lemon juice (squeeze some fresh lemons or use pre-bottled lemon juice)
  • Brush or comb

The best way to lighten your hair naturally with lemon juice and sun is to have hair that hasn’t been washed for a couple days, because the natural oils in your hair help to protect it during the lightening process.

  1. Wet your hair in the shower and towel dry. (Your hair should be damp, but not dripping)
  2. Fill the spray bottle halfway with water, and the other half with lemon juice. Depending on how much hair you have, half a cup or one cup of each ingredient should be plenty.
  3. Shake the bottle before spraying your hair and roots liberally with the water/lemon juice mixture. As you spray, comb/brush your hair every so often to evenly distribute the lemon/water mixture. Continue to spray until it’s saturated.
  4. Lather your body with some sunscreen. Get a towel, and go lay out in the sun with your hair spread out on the towel. You should rotate every so often to expose the back of your hair as well. The sun’s rays are just as necessary as the lemon juice in this process so make sure your hair is exposed to the sun until it is almost completely dry.
  5. Finish with a good shampoo and conditioning treatment.

This method will bring out natural summer highlights and lighten your hair, but will not damage your hair or risk a hair color disaster with a box dying treatment.

The Honey Method

You’ll need:

  • Raw, uncooked honey
  • Distilled water
  • Olive oil
  • Cinnamon
  • Microwave
  • Brush or comb
  • Plastic wrap
  1. Mix together two cups of distilled water and one tablespoon of cinnamon.
  2. Warm up one cup of raw, uncooked honey and ¼ cup of olive oil in the microwave. Stir the warmed solution into the distilled water and cinnamon mixture.
  3. Wet your hair in the shower and towel dry. (Your hair should be damp, but not dripping)
  4. Apply it to your hair, while also combing/brushing the mixture through your hair to distribute evenly.
  5. Gather up your hair and use the plastic wrap to bundle it all up tightly.
  6. Go to bed for the night with the sweet, sticky mixture. (You might want to cover your pillow with a towel to catch any leaks.
  7. In the morning, wash your hair a couple times to completely rinse the mixture out.

This method is effective in lightening your hair, and has the added perk of leaving your hair silky smooth!
