Curly Hair Is In! Know How To Care For It
“Curly hair is not a trend, it’s a lifestyle.” That’s the word on the street lately, and we are finding many of our clients in agreement and overjoyed at the recent embracing of their natural wave and curl textures. Over 65% of the population has some form of curl in their hair, so why are so many of us fighting against it? Here are some tips on caring for your curly locks, to keep your hair looking and feeling fantastic year round.
Start with a curly-centric haircut. Did you know that curly hair should be cut differently than straight or wavy hair? There’s an art – and actually a certification – to the technique, and luckily your stylist here at Pinup knows how to do it masterfully! Our staff has a unique passion for curl texture, and we like to respect your hair as much as we respect you!
Don’t fight the masses. Seriously, one of the best things you can do when caring for your curly hair is to work with, not against your twisting tresses to keep them from spiraling out of control. There are several ways in which you can do this, and our staff would be happy to educate you on proper cleansing, conditioning, drying (yes, there’s even a special way you should dry curls!) and use of products, to get optimal boing, free from frizz.
Wash less, not more. Daily shampooing of curly hair can bring on the frizz and dry out your hair like nothing you’ve ever seen. Because curly hair is naturally more dry than straight hair, you have to take extra care not to strip away the natural oils your scalp produces to keep your hair nourished, and excessive shampooing is the primary cause of this. With fine curls, limit your shampooing to once every 2-3 days or even less often, if you can. If you have super thick hair, keep the shampoo off for a week. Of course, you don’t want to feel gross on those non-shampooing days, so just rinse your curls with warm water to keep them fresh, but moisturized. You can also try a dry shampoo at your roots to keep your hair from looking greasy, while still allowing your hair to rest from over cleansing.
Speaking of moisture, moisturize! While you shouldn’t load up on shampoo, the opposite is true with conditioner! You should be buying twice as much conditioner as shampoo – one for in the shower, and another leave-in solution to seal the moisture in. We love DevaCurl’s Set It Free Moisture Lock spray. It’s a great, leave-in curl spray that leaves your locks hydrated and lightly defined.
